To build large-scale LON networks, subnets are connected to an overall network using additional components, such as routers and repeaters.
Routers are devices with two bus connections used to connect two subnets. Telegrams that are received on one side are checked on the basis of a routing table and are only passed on to the other side if they are intended for the other subnet. If not, the router restricts the transmission of the telegrams and in this way acts to efficiently limit message traffic in the subnet. The required routing table is automatically created by the binding tool during commissioning and is entered into the router.
Repeaters are physical amplifiers without a processing function. They are used for transmission over great distances or when the maximum number of 64 nodes per 2-wire segment (FTT10-A transceiver) has been exceeded.
