Modern thinking in manufacturing is to get away from the ‘economic batch quantity’, which has been standard practice for the last 75 years, and move towards a lot size of one.
TROX has, for example, implemented one-piece flow cellular manufacturing for its VAV products. We assemble and move the product one at a time rather than making lots of components, storing them, and then bringing them together. The idea of one-piece flow is you do all the operations within the flow of the product so it is like a mini factory within the factory or cell.
